The Four Main Residence Permits

3. EU Blue Card (§ 18b AufenthG): For highly-qualified non-EU professionals with a recognised degree and a job offer above the minimum salary threshold (approx. €45,300/year in 2025 for most fields). Offers a faster path to permanent residency — just 21 months with B2 German, or 33 months with B1.
4. Chancenkarte (§ 20a AufenthG): Introduced in 2024, this points-based search visa lets qualified professionals come to Germany to look for work. Points are awarded for qualifications, German skills, professional experience, and age.
Choosing the Right Permit
Your permit type depends on why you're in Germany: employment, self-employment, study, or family. Applying for the wrong category wastes time and can affect your status. Key rule: apply at least 6 weeks before your current permit expires. If you apply on time, a Fiktionsbescheinigung (bridging certificate) preserves your status while the authority decides.
