Your Ausländerbehörde appointment is booked — now what? The biggest reason permit appointments fail is not arriving prepared. Missing a single document can mean another months-long wait for a new appointment. This guide tells you exactly what to bring.
Documents Required for Every Appointment
Regardless of permit type, always bring: a valid passport (valid for at least 6 months beyond your permit end date, with free pages), a biometric passport photo (35×45mm, neutral background, recent), the completed application form (download from your local Ausländerbehörde website), a current registration certificate (Meldebestätigung, max 3 months old), proof of health insurance (membership certificate or card), and the administration fee (€50–110, varies by permit and city — cash or card).
Tip: Bring originals AND 1-2 copies of everything. Some offices keep your copies; others copy on the spot. Having your own saves time.
Documents by Purpose
Employment (§ 18 AufenthG): employment contract (signed), last 3 payslips, employer confirmation letter, and — for some nationalities/professions — Federal Employment Agency approval (Zustimmung der BA) and credential recognition certificate. Study (§ 16b): university admission letter, current Immatrikulationsbescheinigung, proof of funding (blocked account or declaration of support), German language certificate.
Family reunification (§ 27 ff.): marriage or birth certificate (certified + apostilled + translated), sponsor's residence permit and passport copy, housing proof, sponsor's income evidence, A1 language certificate of joining spouse. Self-employment (§ 21): business plan, Gewerbeanmeldung or freelancer status, capital proof, income projections.
Booking an Appointment and Dealing with Long Waits
In Berlin, Munich, and Hamburg, appointments are booked months in advance. Strategy: book the moment your permit has 3 months left. Check daily for cancellations — some authorities have waitlist notifications. In smaller cities and districts, appointments are usually available within 2–4 weeks.
