Germany is one of the most popular destinations for international students — low or no tuition fees, world-class universities, and a gateway to the European job market. But before you start your first semester, you need the right residence permit. Here's what you need to know.

The Student Residence Permit (§ 16b AufenthG)

International students from non-EU countries need an Aufenthaltserlaubnis zum Studium under § 16b of the Residence Act. You apply for this at the local Ausländerbehörde after arriving in Germany on a national D visa (purpose: study). The permit is typically valid for the standard duration of your degree programme and can be renewed.

Work rights: With a student permit, you're allowed to work up to 120 full days or 240 half-days per year — roughly equivalent to a 20-hour/week part-time job. Full-time work during the semester is not permitted.

Documents Required

For the student residence permit you'll typically need: university admission letter, proof of enrolment (Immatrikulationsbescheinigung), proof of German language skills (usually B2 or TestDaF), proof of financial means (blocked account with at least €11,208 for 2025 — approx. €934/month), health insurance certificate, biometric passport photo, and a valid passport.

The blocked account (Sperrkonto) is a key requirement — it must be set up before your visa application. Popular providers include Fintiba, Coracle, and Deutsche Bank's student account. Funds are released in monthly instalments once you arrive.

After Graduation: What Comes Next?

After completing your degree, you're entitled to an 18-month job-seeking permit (§ 20 Abs. 3 AufenthG) during which you can work full-time and job hunt. Once you land a qualifying position, you can transition to an EU Blue Card or a regular employment residence permit. Graduates who studied in Germany also have a faster route to the Niederlassungserlaubnis.
