Your residence permit is expiring — what do you do? Renewing your Aufenthaltserlaubnis in Germany is straightforward if you're prepared, but delaying can put your legal status at risk. Here's how to handle it smoothly.
When and Where to Apply
Apply at least 6 weeks before your permit expires at the Ausländerbehörde (foreigners' authority) for your place of residence. The golden rule: if you apply before expiry, your current status is automatically extended by a bridging certificate (Fiktionsbescheinigung) until a decision is made. Apply after expiry and you'll have a gap in your legal status — a serious problem.
In most German cities, appointments can be booked online. In large cities like Berlin and Munich, expect waits of several months — book as soon as you're within 3 months of expiry.
Documents You'll Need
The exact list depends on your permit purpose, but you'll generally need: application form (downloadable from your local Ausländerbehörde website), valid passport with at least 6 months remaining, biometric passport photo (35×45mm), current registration certificate (Meldebestätigung, max 3 months old), health insurance proof, evidence of financial self-sufficiency (payslips, bank statements, employment contract), and the administration fee (typically €50–110).
For employment permits: bring your current employment contract and last 3 payslips. For study permits: bring your current Immatrikulationsbescheinigung and proof of funding. For family permits: bring evidence of the main permit holder's status.
Common Pitfalls to Avoid
Applying too late: Even one day of expired status can complicate your renewal. Missing documents: Incomplete applications are returned — losing precious weeks. Changed circumstances: If your job, marital status, or study situation changed since your last permit, a simple renewal may not be possible — a new application may be needed. Tip: bring originals and 1-2 copies of every document. Some offices copy on-site; others keep your copies.
