The Einbürgerungstest (citizenship test) is a required step on the path to German naturalisation. It tests knowledge of German politics, history, and society — but don't let that intimidate you. With the right preparation, most people pass comfortably.

What the Test Covers

The test consists of 33 multiple-choice questions, each with four answer options. You choose one. Pass mark: 17 out of 33 correct answers (51%). The questions come from a fixed public catalogue of 310 questions — meaning you can study every single possible question in advance. An additional 3 questions are state-specific (one of 10 questions per Bundesland), chosen from the list for your state.

Topic areas: Basic Law (Grundgesetz) and political system of Germany, democracy, fundamental rights, separation of powers, Federal Constitutional Court, German history (Weimar Republic, Nazi period, GDR, reunification), German federal states and capitals, European integration, and social values.

How to Register and Take the Test

Register with the BAMF (Federal Office for Migration and Refugees) directly or through a Volkshochschule (VHS) — the nationwide official test centres. Registration is available online or in person. Test fee: €25. Duration: 60 minutes. You receive your result immediately. The certificate has no expiry date. The test can be retaken if you don't pass.

How to Prepare Effectively

Official BAMF practice test: bamf.de offers a free online practice test with all 310 questions — the best starting point. Targeted study: Take a mock test first without preparation. Note wrong answers and study those areas specifically. History and constitutional law are the most common weak spots. Apps: Several well-reviewed apps (e.g. 'Einbürgerungstest Deutschland' on Android/iOS) present all 310 questions as flashcards — ideal for daily practice on the go.

Realistic timeline: With 30–60 minutes of study per day, 2–3 weeks of preparation is usually sufficient for most people. Book the test 4–6 weeks in advance to secure your preferred slot.
