A complete naturalisation application is the foundation of a smooth process. Missing documents cause delays of months. This checklist breaks down everything you typically need — organised by category so nothing gets missed.
Mandatory Documents for Every Application
☑ Valid passport (plus older passports as proof of residence duration) ☑ Current qualifying residence permit ☑ Meldebescheinigung (max 3 months old) ☑ Biometric passport photo (35×45mm) ☑ Fully completed naturalisation application form ☑ German language certificate (min. B1: Goethe, telc, DTZ, or equivalent) ☑ Citizenship test certificate (BAMF, max 2 years old)
Personal Documents and Certificates
☑ Birth certificate (certified + apostilled + translated if from abroad) ☑ Marriage certificate / divorce decree (if applicable, certified) ☑ Children's birth certificates (if they're being naturalised together) ☑ If you've had a name change: documents evidencing the change ☑ If widowed: death certificate of spouse
Proof of Residence and Financial Means
☑ Proof of 5 years' lawful residence (old passports, previous permits, visa stamps) ☑ Current payslips (last 3 months) ☑ Current employment contract or self-employment proof ☑ Tax assessments (Steuerbescheide) for last 2–3 years ☑ Confirmation of no current social benefits (Jobcenter letter if applicable) ☑ Bank statements (supplementary, especially for self-employed)
Foreign documents note: Documents issued abroad need an Apostille from the issuing country (from the relevant ministry) plus a certified German translation by a sworn translator registered in Germany. Allow 4–8 weeks and budget €150–400 for this step.

For the 3-year fast-track: proof of voluntary work (min. 2 years, min. 5 hrs/week), awards, certificates of exceptional achievement. For past criminal proceedings: Führungszeugnis and explanatory statements. For military service abroad: relevant documentation.
