When it comes to German language certificates recognised by immigration authorities, telc is one of the three major exam providers in Germany alongside the Goethe-Institut and the ÖSD. telc Deutsch B1 and B2 are widely accepted for residence permit upgrades, naturalisation, and professional purposes. Here is what you need to know about both levels.
What Is telc?
telc (the European Language Certificates) is a Frankfurt-based examination institute offering standardised language tests aligned to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). telc exams are available in multiple languages, but their German language tests are particularly important for immigrants in Germany. telc Deutsch exams are officially recognised by the BAMF, the German immigration authorities, and universities for German language admission requirements.
telc Deutsch B1: The Integration Milestone
The telc Deutsch B1 is the first major landmark for immigrants in Germany. Reaching B1 means you can communicate independently in everyday situations — at work, in shops, with neighbours, at the doctor, in official meetings. This level is required for: applying for the Niederlassungserlaubnis (settlement permit) in most cases, naturalisation applications, and completion of the Integrationskurs (via the DTZ, which is a variant of B1). The telc B1 exam tests all four skills — reading, listening, writing, and speaking — and costs approximately €100 to €180 at authorised test centres. Preparation courses and practice materials are available from telc and from language schools.
telc Deutsch B2: The Professional Standard
The telc Deutsch B2 represents a higher level of language proficiency — you can understand complex texts, participate in nuanced discussions, and express yourself fluently on a wide range of topics. B2 is increasingly important for immigrants because it is required for accelerated paths to the settlement permit under the skilled worker immigration rules (§18c AufenthG) and for Blue Card holders who want to apply after 21 months instead of 33. It is also often required or strongly preferred by German employers in skilled professions, and by universities for degree programmes taught in German.
The telc Deutsch B2 exam follows the same four-skill format as B1 but is noticeably more demanding. Texts are more complex, writing tasks require structured argumentation, and speaking tasks involve more abstract discussion. Allow yourself several months of preparation if you are moving from B1 to B2 — it is a significant step up.
telc vs. Goethe: Which Should You Choose?
For immigration purposes, the certificates are equivalent — both are accepted. The practical differences are: telc tends to be slightly cheaper and is available at more locations across Germany (many language schools and adult education centres). Goethe exams are considered prestigious and may be preferred in academic contexts. The exam formats are similar but not identical — the telc writing section and Goethe writing section have slightly different task types. If you are preparing for a specific exam, make sure your practice materials match the format of your chosen provider.
